Many gardeners spend the dwindling days of autumn fussing and cleaning up their perennial gardens. Having a neat and tidy perennial bed may look lovely however there are many more benefits to a less manicured look. Leaving taller grasses and perennials such as Rudbeckia, Echinacea and Phlox will catch and keep snow around your plants for the winter season. This extra layer of insulation provided by Mother Nature is often enough to allow more tender specimens to survive in a colder, less ideal zone. Clean up is always on the spring to-do list, so leave well enough alone until then.
