Hellebores may well be poking their noses through the snow in late February. These marvelous perennials are best known for their tolerance to drought and neglect, does it get any better? They are sensitive to poor drainage, so a regular review of conditions is wise as the season progresses. Hailed as being deer-proof, even in February when deer snacks may be scarce, the mighty Hellebore stands untouched. Warmer weather will prove to be unwelcomed to the Hellebore as even in the woodland garden they will simply stand still. Enjoy the very early blossoms of the Lenten Rose, Helleborus orientalis anytime this month providing snow cover has diminished to just a trace. I have seen them in full bloom during a snow storm which speaks to their incredible durability.
