This cedar is native to North America and grows into a narrow, upright, pyramidal form. The foliage is bright emerald green in colour, a colour that sticks around all year round. Standing 4-5 m (13-16 ft) tall with a seriously slim waist of 1-1.25 m (3-4 ft) this zone 4 tree loves the sun and produces miniature cones. ‘Emerald’ is a well-known, resilient, and adaptable cedar that takes well to pruning. There is nothing negative to say about this selection.
Cedars are known to make excellent hedges or vertical accent pieces, and are good for mass plantings. Additionally, the Emerald Cedar is exceptionally great for a living fence, particularly where space is limited, due to its slender physique. Its foliage grows from the ground up and is fairly condensed. When planting saplings some extra care may be required to get off to a good start; proper location, enough water, well-drained soil, and mulch. They also may require burlap wrapping during the winter months to prevent damage from heavy snow, sun burn and winter winds. With a life span of up to 30 years, get comfortable, and watch this cedar flourish.
The Thuja occidentalis ‘Emerald’ is truly on the cutting hedge, a real cedar of the pack.
